Everyday Speech Practice with Kids at the Grocery Store

As a speech-language pathologist specializing in correcting the R sound for kids, teens, and adults, one thing has become clear over the years—children who practice at home with their parents or caregivers make faster, more lasting progress. No matter what the speech and language goals are, consistent at-home reinforcement makes a world of difference!
The great news? You don’t need structured “homework” to help your child improve their R sounds. Instead, you can weave speech practice into your everyday family activities. One of my favorite ways to do this is during a routine trip to the grocery store!

R Adventures at the Grocery Store
The grocery store is a treasure trove of opportunities to practice the R sound in a natural, engaging way. Whether your child is just beginning to master R or working on perfecting their carryover into everyday speech, this activity will help reinforce their skills while making shopping more interactive and fun.
Here in the Greater Lansing area of Michigan, we have several grocery stores with R in their names: Meijer, Kroger, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s. Does your local grocery store have an R in its name? If so, that’s a great place to start!
Preparing for Your R Speech Adventure
Before heading out, consider how you make your shopping list. Do you write it on paper? Type it in your phone? Or do you just wing it? No matter your method, you can incorporate R practice right from the start.
● Listening for R: Read your grocery list aloud to your child. Can they hear words with the R sound? Ask them to identify them!
● Reading R Words: If your child can read, have them read the list aloud and emphasize the R words.
● Writing R Words: If your child is working on spelling and writing, have them help write the list. You can even assign them the task of writing down only the words that contain R!
● Finding R Words: Once the list is ready, challenge your child to be in charge of finding the R-word items at the store.

On the Way to the Grocery Store
The adventure begins before you even enter the store! Talk with your child about the trip using R-rich vocabulary:
● Directions: How many right turns and left turns do you need to take?
● Traffic Lights: How many red lights and green lights do you see?
● Distance: How far away is the grocery store?
In the Grocery Store: R Practice Everywhere!
Once inside, the possibilities for R sound practice are endless. Here are a few ways to make your shopping trip an engaging speech session:
Categories with R Words
Encourage your child to explore different sections of the store and name items that contain R.
● Produce Section: Carrots, pears, strawberries
● Dairy Section: Butter, yogurt, creamer, sour cream
● Bakery Section: Bread, crackers, croissants
● Frozen Section: Frozen peas, ice cream, frozen dinners
● Dry Goods Section: Cereal, spaghetti, crackers, rice
Common Grocery Store Words with R
Have your child say and emphasize R words they encounter while shopping:
● Shopping caRt
● BReakfast foods
● DinneR (or suppeR) foods
● DesseRt foods
● PeRsonal items
● PapeR goods
● CleaneRs
Comparing Items
Use comparison questions to encourage conversation and natural R sound practice:
● Which item is more expensive?
● Which food tastes better?
● Which product is heavier or lighter?

Making Speech Fun and Natural
The key to successful speech practice at home is keeping it fun and natural. The grocery store is a perfect environment because it provides real-life context for the R sound. Your child is more likely to retain and generalize their skills when they see the relevance in their daily life.
By integrating speech practice into everyday routines like grocery shopping, you are giving your child an opportunity to solidify their R skills in a meaningful and engaging way. Plus, you’re building their confidence in using clear and correct speech outside of the therapy room!
So next time you head to the grocery store, turn it into an R adventure. With a little creativity, every shopping trip can be a step toward stronger, clearer speech!
